(Vatican Radio) On August 9th, the Church celebrates the life and virtue of Saint
Teresia Benedicta of the Cross who died at the Auschwitz concentration camp on this
day in 1942. Born to Jewish parents in 1891, Edith Stein entered the Carmelite convent
in Cologne, Germany, taking the name Sr. Teresia Benedicta of the Cross. Blessed Pope
John Paul II proclaimed the German Catholic nun and philosopher a saint on October
11, 1998. Together with Saint Brigit of Sweden and Saint Catherine of Siena, she is
Patron saint of Europe.
