(Vatican Radio) At least five people were killed on Friday when a suicide bomber
struck a mosque in the north-eastern Nigerian city of Maiduguri. The suicide bomber
is suspected of being a member of Boko Haram, an Islamist group which has reportedly
been responsible for hundreds of deaths this year. The city of Maiduguri is a stronghold
of Boko Haram Islamists.
Deputy governor of the region Sanna Umar Mustapha
was attending Friday prayers at the mosque when the attack took place, but was able
to escape unharmed. He told reporters that the bomber appeared to be just 15 years
old.
Boko Haram Insurgents have claimed responsibility for another series
of attacks in central Nigeria over the weekend, in which more than 65 people were
killed.
