Archbishop of Visakhapatnam appointed

July 03, 2012: Pope Benedict XVI has appointed on Tuesday Archbishop Prakash Mallavarapu to be the Archbishop of Visakhapatnam in the Southern Indian state of Andrapradesh. Till date he has been the bishop of the Diocese of Vijayawada.
Archbishop Mallavarapu has replaced Archbishop Mariadas Kagithapu, MSFS who resigned from the pastoral governance of the Archdiocese of Visakhapatnam on completion of his 75 years of age. He has submitted his resignation in accordance with canon 401 § 1 of the Code of Canon law, which says ‘A diocesan Bishop who has completed his seventy-fifth year of age is requested to offer his resignation from office to the Supreme Pontiff, who, taking all the circumstances into account, will make provision accordingly.’
