6 million more people at risk of hunger: Save the Children
June 19, 2012: At least 6 million people are at risk of hunger in developing countries
because of economic crisis. The number would rise to 33 million, in case of acute
financial crisis, revealed a Press release by Save the Children, Italy on Monday
at the start of work of the G20 in Mexico.
In the new report "A chance to
grow," the NGO argued that recent downgrades on the future of the economies of advanced
countries have the effect that millions more people will have to face hunger by 2013.
"In a world that is already fighting the hunger of millions of children, this
news is devastating," said Valerio Blacks Director General of Save the Children, Italy.
"While developed countries are trying to recover the damages caused by the banking
crisis, the major concern for many families in Africa and Asia is how to feed their
children." "It’s understandable that the G20 leaders devote much debate to the
European economy but the fact that poor children have no voice at that table, does
not mean that they should be left crumbs. The G20 leaders must find time to also think
about these children, "said Valerio Blacks.
