Refugees flee Sudan

Sudan warned of renewed hostilities with newly independent neighbour South Sudan yesterday as peace talks stalled in Ethiopia. The two countries are trying to finalize their border, come up with a payment plan for the transport of South Sudanese oil to terminals in Sudan, and divide the pre-division national debt.

Meanwhile, thousands of refugees from Sudan have fled to South Sudan's Upper Nile State. The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) has warned of what it calls "a sharply worsening humanitarian situation" in that area.
"As a result of the fighting, villagers have limited access to food and the fields for farming,” said Adrian Edwards, UNHCR spokesperson in Geneva.
“A number of refugees have been taken to humanitarian run hospitals in poor health after surviving on tree leaves for some time,” he continued. “We are concerned about the refugees' safety in Elfoj due to their proximity to the border."
