Sudan warned of renewed hostilities with newly independent neighbour South Sudan yesterday
as peace talks stalled in Ethiopia. The two countries are trying to finalize their
border, come up with a payment plan for the transport of South Sudanese oil to terminals
in Sudan, and divide the pre-division national debt.
Meanwhile, thousands
of refugees from Sudan have fled to South Sudan's Upper Nile State. The United Nations
refugee agency (UNHCR) has warned of what it calls "a sharply worsening humanitarian
situation" in that area. "As a result of the fighting, villagers have limited access
to food and the fields for farming,” said Adrian Edwards, UNHCR spokesperson in Geneva. “A
number of refugees have been taken to humanitarian run hospitals in poor health after
surviving on tree leaves for some time,” he continued. “We are concerned about the
refugees' safety in Elfoj due to their proximity to the border." Listen:
