(May 16, 2012) Pope Benedict XVI sent a message of good wishes to the new French
President Francois Hollande as he assumed office on Tuesday. Hollande, representing
the socialist party was elected President on May 6th after defeating former
French President Nicolas Sarkozy. The Pope prayed that France will be a factor of
peace and solidarity, in Europe and the international community, active in the
search for the common welfare and in respect for life and the dignity of every person
and all populations. The Pope also prayed that President Hollande, with the help
of God and with respect for the noble, spiritual and moral traditions of the country,would
courageously follow the just and fraternal aims for the good of society, particularly
for the poorest nations of the world.
