The Apostolic Nuncio to Great Britain awarded the "Silver Rose of St. Nicholas"
April 12, 2012: The Apostolic Nuncio to Great Britain, Mgr. Antonio Mennini, has
been awarded the "Silver Rose of St. Nicholas.' This is a prestigious academic award
given each year since 2005 by the Ecumenical Institute of the University of Fribourg
in Switzerland, to those who, following the example of St. Nicola, are distinguished
for their contribution to ecclesial communion and to make visible God's love for human
beings. The ceremony of recognition - will take place on May 9th, the feast of the
translation of the relics of the saint from Myra to Bari, in the Cathedral of Saint
Nicolas of Freiburg, Switzerland. Mgr. Antonio Mennini who completes 65 years
in September, has a degree in theology at the Gregorian. Before landing in London
in 2010, Msgr. Mennini was for two years nuncio in Bulgaria (2000-2002), for six years
in Russia (2002 - 2008) and most recently in the former Soviet Republic of Uzbekistan
(2008-2010). Because of his knowledge of the Orthodox world, he has been invited
to deliver a lecture on May 9, at the national meeting of the Bishops' Conference
Confederation (ETUC) and the Assembly of Orthodox Bishops of Switzerland to be held
in Freiburg. The title of his lecture will be "Orthodox Christians and Catholics in
Russia. Developments and prospects for the future. "
