CAFOD demands UN, UK action on world poverty

(April 11, 2012) The Catholic Agency for Overseas Development – CAFOD, the official relief and development agency of the Church in England and Wales, is demanding that the United Kingdom and the United Nations develop an anti-poverty plan that would take effect in 2015, upon the expiry of the Millennium Development Goals, MDGs.
“We hail the progress made in many areas since the agreement of the MDGs, but we want that work must begin urgently on designing a replacement framework,” CAFOD said in a statement. “If we do not start working right now, with the necessary clarity, urgency and resources required to achieve a strong outcome, we will reach 2015 with no effective global plan for tackling poverty, which we think is a betrayal of responsibility and an abdication of leadership that will rightly shame our generation,” CAFOD added.
