Archbishop Coleridge appointed to Brisbane

Pope Benedict XVI on Monday nominated Archbishop Mark Coleridge to head the Archdiocese of Brisbane in Australia.

Archbishop Mark Benedict Coleridge was born September 25, 1948 in Melbourne (Australia), where he completed his priestly studies at the Inter-diocesan Seminary, "Corpus Christi College." He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Melbourne May 18, 1974.

After exercising the ministry as coadjutor vicar in the parishes of Drysdale, Doncaster East, Ashburton and Pascoe Vale, he was sent to Rome, where he obtained a Licentiate in Sacred Scripture at the Pontifical Biblical Institute. Later he was appointed Professor of Sacred Scripture at the "Catholic Theological College" in Melbourne. He returned to the Pontifical Biblical Institute where he obtained his doctorate in 1988. He was appointed Professor in the "Catholic Theological College" in Melbourne and later became the spokesman for the Archdiocese Mass Media. He was Dean of the "Catholic Theological College". From 1998 he served in the Vatican’s Secretariate of State, Section for General Affairs.

Archbishop Coleridge was elected titular bishop of Teveste and Auxiliary Bishop of Melbourne, and received episcopal ordination on 19 June 2002. He became Archbishop of Canberra and Goulburn June 19, 2006.

Within the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference, is a member of the Standing Committee and the Committee for Doctrine and Morals. In addition, chairs the Editorial Board of ICEL for the translation of the Roman Missal. Archbishop Coleridge also serves as a member of the General Secretariat of the Synod of Bishops, the Pontifical Council for Culture and the Pontifical Council for Social Communications.
