Cardinal Turkson releases handbook for Christain business people
(March 30, 2012) According to a leading Vatican official, the common malady that
afflicts many, particularly businesspeople is the tendency to separate one’s faith
from one’s work. Cardinal Peter Turkson, president of the Pontifical Council for
Justice and Peace made the observation on Friday at the start of the 24th
world congress of the federation of associations of Christian business leaders, known
by its French acronym, UNIAPAC. Some 2000 Christian business people attending the
March 30 - April 1st congress in Lyon, France, are discussing the theme,
“Business, source of hope.” The Ghanian cardinal spoke as he released a 30-page handbook
entitled, “Vocation of the Business Leader: A Reflection” which is the outcome of
an international seminar of business leaders and scholars in Rome, held in February
2011, on the theme, “Caritas in Veritate: The Logic of Gift and the Meaning of Business”.
Cardinal Turkson noted that the separation of faith from one’s work leads to the modern
affliction of a divided life. He said the Church desires to help businesspeople live
out their professional lives fruitfully for the common good, and he pointed to the
Church’s social doctrine. The handbook addresses the important role of vocation for
the business leader in today’s global economy and the contribution of the Church’s
social principles for the modern corporation. The book, “The Vocation of the Business
Leader”, fulfils its purpose of being a helpful guide to business leaders seeking
to grow in the virtue of charity as befits their vocation, Cardinal Turkson noted.
