The nuclear security summit in Seoul, South Korea, has wrapped up with world leaders
renewing their commitment to strengthen nuclear security and reduce the threat of
nuclear terrorism. A communiqué issued at the end of the two-day meeting was light
on specifics on how to reduce the risk of atomic materials falling the wrong hands,
but called for all vulnerable material to be secured in four years. United Nations
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon set out five areas for collective action at the Summit:
1) bold steps to bridge the trust gap; 2) emergency response, disaster risk reduction
and resilience building; 3) boosting the UN’s role; 4) a stronger partnership with
the nuclear industry and civil society; and 5) progress on nuclear disarmament and
non-proliferation.
