Pope Benedict XVI has departed Rome on his first Apostolic Visit to Mexico and Cuba.
The first stop on the Pope’s journey will be Mexico, where he will spend two days
in and around the city of Leòn. One of those waiting to greet the Holy Father on his
arrival will be the Apostolic Nuncio to Mexico, Archbishop Christophe Pierre.
He
spoke with Vatican Radio ahead of the Pope’s arrival in the country saying, “ there
are a lot of expectations, people are curious to see what will happen in this first
encounter between the Mexican people and the Pope in the light of the wonderful and
extraordinary experience of the encounter between John Paul II and the Mexican people. Pope
Benedict is due to arrive in the city Mexican city of Leon this afternoon (local time),
beginning a week-long voyage to the Americas that will also take him to the island
nation of Cuba. Listen
