International Day for the elimination of racial discrimination observed
(March 21, 2012) The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination
was observed on Wednesday (21 March) on the theme “Racism and conflict.” In his
message for this day, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said “This is an
important opportunity to remember the devastating impact of racism. As we mark this
International day my thoughts are with the victims”. Ban stressed that racism is
a threat to peace, security, justice and social progress and represents a violation
of human rights that deeply affects individuals and tears apart the social fabric.
He lamented that racial discrimination and racism have been used as a weapon to generate
fear and hatred. In extreme cases, ruthless political leaders have promoted a policy
of inciting injury, genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, he added. Ban
said there are numerous treaties and valid instruments to prevent and put an end
to racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and intolerance that results. Nevertheless
racism continues to cause suffering for millions of people around the world. It thrives
on ignorance, prejudice and stereotypes. Ban said the U.N is responding by working
to foster inclusion, dialogue, reconciliation and human rights. Where companies
have been destroyed by conflict, the United Nations strives to promote peace processes
that aim to strengthen these values
