World Council of Churches denounces human rights violations in Indonesia
(March 17.2012) The executive committee f the World Council of Churches (WCC) deplores
the tragic escalation of violence in Papuasia-Indonesia. And the persistent violation
of Human Rights. The WCC has called upon the government of Jakarta to take steps
towards the de-militarization of the area and the release of political detainees.
The Papuasians complain of lack of sanitary and educational facilities not to speak
of other areas of underdevelopment. A rcent project promoted by Jakarta has been the
migration versus Papua, especially from the provinces of Java and Sulawesi. This has
resulted in new economic activites resulting in a loss of land for the natives and
the gradual erosion of their native culture. The Christian leaders warn of a silent
genocide of the Papuans; and they urge that the UN take steps to obtain rights and
justice for the native population and an integral development of every human person.
