The Pope’s full day of activities on Saturday


(March 10.2012) After receiving the Annual Yearbook, Pope Benedict XVI continued, Saturday, his private audiences with 17 US Bishops on their so-called 5-yearly “Ad Limina” visits to render account of their jurisdictions. At midday he received in audience Frére Alois , the Prior of Taizé Community, an ecumenical monastic order in France, composed of about 100 brothers from Protestant, Eastern Orthodox and Catholic traditions. The order has a strong devotion to peace and justice through prayer and meditation. It was founded in 1940 by Brother Roger Schutz, a Protestant. Through the community's ecumenical outlook, they are encouraged to live in the spirit of kindness, simplicity and reconciliation. Taizè will hold its 36th European meeting in Rome from 28th December 2012 till 2nd January 2013. At 12.15 also on Saturday the Pope met with Dr Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury and Primate of the Anglican Communion, who joined Pope Benedict XVI at 5,30 p.m. to celebrate Vespers at the church of Sts Andrew and Gregory the Great located on the Caelian Hill, in front of the Palatine in Rome. It had been a monastery.Saint Augustine of Canterbury had been prior of the monastery before leading the Gregorian mission to the Anglo-Saxons. The Church passed to the Camaldolese monks in 1573. The Camaldolese order is celebrating the 1000 anniversary of foundation, this year. All these events explain the solemnity of the Vespers celebrated by the Pope and the current Archbishop of Canterbury.
