Germany presents Pope commemorative stamp
(March 07, 2012) A commemorative postage stamp celebrating the 500th
anniversary of the creation of one of the most beautiful paintings in the world –
Raphael’s “Sistine Madonna” was presented by Germany’s Minister of Finance, Wolfgang
Schauble to Pope Benedict XVI on Wednesday. The postage stamp was jointly released
by the Vatican and Germany on 1st. March. Pope Benedict received the stamp from
Schauble in private in the Vatican soon after the weekly general audience. Renaissance artist Raphael was commissioned to do the painting in 1512 and it can still be admired in the Gallery of Antique Artsits in Dresden, Germany
