Cardinal Gracias calls for "ethical" journalism to transform Indian society
(March, 07, 2012) Indian Cardinal Oswald Gracias, Archbishop of Bombay has called
for ethical journalism to transform Indian society. Cardinal Gracias, who is also
the president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of India – CBCI, made the call
at the inauguration of the national seminar on print journalism in India, held at
St. Paul Media Complex in Bandra on March 3. The theme of the seminar was "The press
in India - a mandate for social transformation." Cardinal Gracias said "The media
have an indispensable role in social transformation, and therefore, we must turn to
an ethics of journalism. Excessive freedom is dangerous that is why a journalist
must have self imposed rules and regulations. Press freedom is not a license to do
what you want," he added. The event was organised by the Society of St. Paul, the
Office for Social Communications of the CBCI and the Media Desk of the Archdiocese
of Bombay. The Society of St. Paul is preparing celebrations for the centenary of
Blessed Giacomo Alberione, founder of the Pauline Family.
