Pope condoles the victims of train accident in Poland
March 6, 2012: Pope Benedict XVI on Tuesday condoled the death of several people
in a train accident in Poland, and expressed his deep sympathy and spiritual closeness
to the bereaved families. Two trains running on the same track collided head-on
in southern Poland on Saturday, leaving 16 people dead and 58 injured - the country's
worst train disaster in more than 20 years. The accident occurred near the town of
Szczekociny, just north of Krakow. In a telegram sent to the Archbishop Józef Michalik,
chairman of the Polish Episcopal Conference, Pope Benedict expressed his sympathy
and assured his prayers for the victims of the tragic accident. The Pope said he joins
in their hour of mourning and pray for the departed souls. He wished the injured
a speedy and full recovery to health.
