Women for Ecumenical Dialogue

February 28, 2012: The fifty-sixth session of the United Nations’ Commission on the Status of Women opened on Monday with discussions around its priority theme — the empowerment of rural women and their role in poverty and hunger eradication, sustainable development and current challenges.

The Ecumenical Women is present at the 56th session chaired by the Liberian Marjon Kamara, held in New York at the UN headquarters from 27 February to 9 March.
Ecumenical Women is an international coalition of church denominations and ecumenical organizations which have status with the Economic & Social Council (ECOSOC) at the United Nations. It was born in 2000 to give voice to the actions of the many Christians who have interacted with the projects of international institutions, national and continental, such as the UN.

"Justice is the heart of our faith" said Ecumenical Women at the meet and has confirmed its commitment to work for the construction of a world ruled by justice, so as to defeat all forms of violence, marginalization and poverty, especially those forms that are directed against women.
The Ecumenical Women insisted that it must work in closer coordination between the political institutions and religious communities. The annual session of the Committee of the United Nations is an occasion for a reflection of many voices on the situation of women in the world’ it said.
At the meeting, the Ecumenical Women are called to promote the knowledge of those forms that see Christians in the forefront in the fight against violence against women, thus providing a real testimony of what Christians can do together in defense of the sacredness of life for the equality of man and woman.
