February 28, 2012: This week, Buddhists in Kathmandu are helping around 30 Catholics
from around Asia to understand Tibetan Buddhism. The Maryknoll participants – including
priests, nuns and volunteer workers – are attending the five-day gathering: An
understanding of Tibetan Buddhism in order to see how they conduct their own work
better by looking at things through a Buddhist perspective. The week long gathering
from February 26 to March 2 involves listening to lectures from Buddhist monks and
nuns, as well as visiting various monasteries and witnessing several rituals. Father
Joseph Thaler, a Maryknoll missionary working in Nepal said that the objectives of
the meeting were to “understand and appreciate the uniqueness and essence of Tibetan
Buddhism. And also to understand the historical and present reality of the Tibetan
people.”
