February 14, 2012: Normalcy has returned to St. Mary's Anglo Indian Higher Secondary
School in the Southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu where a student had stabbed a teacher
to death four days ago. Headmaster Fr. Sibi Mathew said they would resume regular
classes from Tuesday. The school managed by the Salesians of Don Bosco yesterday
organized a condolence service where teachers from other schools also attended. The
headmaster said they would start counseling sessions for students who were in contact
with the slain teacher. “All of them are visibly shaken now, so it will take time
for them to cope with the situation,” Fr. Mathew added. The school has cleaned
and painted the classroom where the 15-year-old ninth grader stabbed Uma Maheswari,
41, who taught science and Hindi. The 160-year-old school has 1,726 students. The
Salesians have collected some 500,000 rupees for the education of Maheswari’s daughters.
The headmaster said many parents and alumni also have offered to help and the school
would open a fixed deposit account for the children.
