Pope's Condolence for Brazil Buildings Collapse


(February 08, 2012) Pope Benedict XVI has expressed deep sadness over the tragic collapse of three buildings in Rio de Janeiro, Brazi, on Jan. 25. Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone has sent a message on the Pope's behalf to Archbishop Dom Orani John Tempesta of Rio de Janeiro conveying the Pope’s sentiments. "Deeply saddened by the tragic consequences of the collapse of three buildings in the city, where many families are mourning their loved ones, His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI wishes to express his spiritual closeness in this hour of trial by ensuring his prayers for the dead and imploring the Lord for comfort and support for the injured and those hit by the tragedy,” the message read. The Pope also extended his blessing to those engaged in relief work. The buildings collapse in downtown Rio has killed at least 17 people.
