Prospects for mideast peace

Palestinian and Israeli negotiators will meet this week after more than a year of deadlocked peacemaking and present their positions on core disputes to foreign mediators. Palestinian delegate Saeb Erekat and Israel's Yitzhak Molcho will meet on Tuesday in Jordan. Israel has yet to confirm the meeting.

Meanwhile, As the New Year dawns so do hopes for peace and reconciliation in the Middle East.
Gershon Baskin is Co-Chairman of the Israel- Palestine Centre for Research and Information.

For 24 years as Co-Director of the organisation, Gershon has been at the forefront of efforts to bring about an end to conflict and bring peace to these two peoples. Most recently he was involved in the negotiations aimed at securing the release of kidnapped Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.
