Tensions remain high in Democratic Republic of Congo after a Nov 28 poll was marred
by violence and allegations of electoral fraud. The country’s opposition is calling
for peaceful demonstrations across the country early next week to protest against
Joseph Kabila's disputed election victory.
Opposition leader Etienne Tshisekedi,
who came second according to provisional results, declared himself president on Friday
igniting tensions further.
Fr Sean O’Leary, is Director of the South Africa
based Denis Hurley Peace Institute and led a team of international election observers
to monitor the poll.
He told Lydia O’Kane the winner should be supported. ““My
feeling is that there is support for Kabila in the DRC and that cannot be denied and
because of the system they had of counting the votes at the voting centres it’s very
are to cheat on the actual results."
The Supreme Court is expected to ratify
the results before Dec. 17. Listen to Lydia O'Kane's interview
