Papal envoy to celebrate centennial of Myanmar cathedral
(Dec.07, 2011) An envoy of Pope Benedict XVI will lead a solemn Mass on the 100th
anniversary of the Cathedral in Yangon, Myanmar on Thursday, the Feast of the Immaculate
Conception. Cardinal Renato Martino, retired president of the Pontifical Council
for Justice and Peace will concelebrate Mass in St. Mary’s Cathedral, which is dedicated
to the Immaculate Conception. Joining him at the alter will be Archbishop Charles
Bo of Yangon, Archbishop Giovanni d'Aniello, the apostolic delegate in Myanmar and
Laos, and the country's bishops. Invitees include Aung San Suu Kyi who is a Buddhist,
the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize laureate and leader of the country's National League for
Democracy. Cardinal Martino is expected to read a message from Pope Benedict at the
event.
