Aid effectiveness forum begins today in South Korea
Major global aid donors meet in South Korea this week hoping to coordinate the billions
of dollars spent on development in developing nations. The discussions in the city
of Busan will centre on the role of emerging powers as development partners and examining
the array of funding options and partnerships now available to help the poor.
“It’s
a gathering of leaders from government, civil society, private sector and other partners
about how to make development partnership, in particular how to make aid, most effective
for achieving better outcomes and better results for developing countries,” says Joachim
von Amsberg, vice president of the World Bank aid agency.
“The old dividing
line between developed and developing countries really has blurred,” he said. “We’re
discussing what that means for the future of development partnership, all with the
objective of achieving even better outcomes and addressing the still very serious
remaining social problems in the world.”
