Vatican councils launch “Film and Faith”
The offices of the Pontifical Council for Culture and the Pontifical Council for Social
Communications were the scene Tuesday of the opening Press Conference of the 15th
edition of the Tertio Millennio Film Fest. Organized by the Italian organisation
Fondazione Ente dello Spettacolo, and presided over by Dario E. Viganò, the
festival proposes cinema as "an opportunity to ponder the problems and challenges
of the contemporary world as well as to confront those questions which none of us
can avoid". The theme for the 2011 season is "Love, death, miracles. A phenomenology
of contemporary society".The Secretary of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, Msgr. Paul Tighe says that one of the main features of this year’s Festival season is a two-day international convention on “Film and Faith” at the Pontifical Lateran University December 1st and 2nd. He says: “One of our desires in sponsoring this was to look at one of the important realities in the lives of young people, which is the world of cinema, the world of imagination and see how that inter-relates with the world of faith”.
The convention is divided into five sessions, and it is an opportunity to think about Faith and how it is lived by filmmakers, in a society subject to more and more radical transformations and secularization.
Msgr. Tighe says that the convention does not necessarily want to look at films related exclusively on faith or religion: “Much of the world of cinema opens up a world that is in turn open to transcendence. We want to see how a generation of children who have grown up with Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings…, are able to think about the deeper questions in life; the meaning of life, the value of life, the point of sacrifice, and to see if we can use these as a means to also putting them into dialogue with the insights of faith, with the belief of Christians”.
