Implementing the Apostolic Exhortation's conclusions
Pope Benedict formally handed over the Apostolic Exhortation to bishops from across
Africa at a Mass on the final day of his visit to Benin. The document contains the
pope's conclusions arising from the Second Synod of Bishops for Africa in 2009. One
of those prelates who travelled to Benin for this hand-over was Archbishop John Baptist
Odama of Gulu in northern Uganda. Afterwards he spoke about how he hopes to implement
the guidelines contained in the Exhortation to help bring about peace and reconciliation
in northern Uganda where a long-standing brutal civil war raged until recently. Arcbishop
Odama said he was "very happy and excited" about this document that he believes will
give "a new impetus" to attempts to heal the splintered communities in northern Uganda.
