International Conference on Stem Cells Begins on 9th
November 08, 2011: An international conference on stem cells will be held
from 9-11 November in the New Synod, said Rev. Tomasz Trafny, Official of the Pontifical
Council for Culture and Head of Department of Science and Faith on Tuesday.
He
said during a press meet that the conference has two tasks. First of all we investigate
the issue of stem cells from a different horizon than the usual type of bioethical
reflection. Our initiative aims to embrace multiple problems in a key Interdisciplinary
reading which will include both the presentation of the state of the art medical research
on adult stem cells, and reflection belonging to the humanities. We would also
like to illustrate and discuss some problems and challenges that arise in the wide
horizon of interactions between scientific research and culture, and that can have
a significant impact on the future of man. the Vatican officia added.
The
second task, which at the same time becomes a great challenge, is to attempt to translate
the results of sophisticated medical science to an audience that goes beyond the narrow
circle of experts. This is a difficult task in order to open a channel of communication
between the scientific communities and the general public. The conference is divided
into three sections: medical, bioethics and cultural issues including the philosophical
and educational.
There will be more than 30 speakers in the conference.
Some of the patients who have benefited from adult stem cell research will also attend
the conference. This conference not only see the participation of distinguished
speakers and guests enjoy the collaboration and support of two other departments of
the Holy See: the Pontifical Council for Pastoral Care of Health and the Pontifical
Academy for Life.
