Ireland goes to the polls to elect a President


Ireland goes to the polls on Thursday to elect a new President. A record seven candidates are vying for the largely ceremonial post, and polls say the election is too close to predict. Independent candidate Sean Gallagher holds a slight lead in opinion polls over Labour party Michael D. Higgins. The outgoing president, Mary McAleese, has served in the position for 14 years.
