Pope appoints two officials for 2012 synod

(October 22 2011) Pope Benedict XVI on Saturday appointed an American cardinal and a French archbishop as officials to next year’s world synod of bishops in the Vatican that will discuss re-evangelization. Cardinal Donald Wuerl, Archbishop of Washington, United States, and Archbishop Pierre Marie Carré of Montpellier, France, have been appointed Relator General and Special Secretary respectively of the 13th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops schedule from Oct. 7-28, 2012, in the Vatican on the theme, “The New Evangelization for the Transmission of the Christian Faith”. Pope Benedict is concerned about flagging faith of Catholics worldwide and has taken several initiatives in this regard, including the synod. In October last year, he established a new Vatican department, the Pontifical Council for Promoting New Evangelization, to help find ways "to re-propose the perennial truth of the Gospel" in traditional Christians countries where secularism is smothering faith life. On Monday he formally established the "Year of Faith" from Oct. 11, 2012 to Nov. 24, 2013 to give a new impetus to the Church’s New Evangelization and mission ‘ad gentes’.
