There's an episode in our archive series "The Vatican Centuries ", connected to
the Reformation and Martin Luther:
"In Rome the construction of the new Saint
Peter's was making heavy demands and in 1516 Pope Leo extended his Peter indulgences
into Germany. Dominican Friar Tetzel was appointed to preach . It was a match to a
bonfire. In 1517 Martin Luther nailed his ninety-five theses to the door of the
Castle Church in Wittenberg. The Reformation was alight...."
And in 1529
the princes favourable to the Reformation issued a 'Protest'. And the ' Protestant
' was born.
