Push underway to re-start Israeli/Palestinian peace talks
A last-ditch international push is underway in New York to try to re-launch Israeli-Palestinian
peace talks and avert a crisis over Palestinian statehood at the United Nations. Discussions
are continuing after President Mahmoud Abbas said he would demand full membership
of the world body for a Palestinian state at the U.N. General Assembly this week.
The
move is opposed Israel and the United States.
“The United States has taken
a very strong position”, says Gershon Baskin from the Isreal/Palestine Center for
Research and Information.
Speaking to Lydia O’Kane about the current situation,
he adds that “the European Union, the other main player of the Quartet is deeply divided
within itself”.
Even with a loss in the Security Council, the Palestinians
are expected to take their case for recognition to the General Assembly. Listen
