Papal legate for the centenary celebrations in Moscow
(September 17, 2011) Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Cardinal Jozef Tomko, retired
Prefect of the Vatican Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples, as his special
legate for the centenary celebration of the dedication of the Cathedral of the Immaculate
Conception in Moscow, Russia. The event will take place on Sunday 25th
September. This Cathedral was sponsored by the “The Art of Goodness”, Charitable
Foundation which promotes European sacred music in Russia, to support young Russian
musicians and musicologists wishing to specialize in this area of knowledge. In fact
every year more than 100 concerts of sacred, classical and ancient music are held
in the Cathedral. Thanks to the special ‘atmosphere’ of the functional church and
the superb acoustics of its inner space, the concerts in the Cathedral have become
an indispensable part of Moscow’s cultural and spiritual life. The papal letter of
nomination had been issued from Castel Gandodlfo last August .
