South Africa: ANC youth leader Julius Malema faces disciplinary hearing
South African police used stun grenades and water cannon on Tuesday to disperse supporters
of outspoken ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema, who faced a party disciplinary
hearing today that could derail his political career. Among the charges against Malema
is one of bringing the ANC into disrepute by calling for an overthrow of the elected
government in neighbouring Botswana. Malema is a controversial figure who has called
for the nationalisation of South Africa’s mining sector – an issue that the editor
of the region’s largest Catholic weekly newspaper, the Southern Cross, Gunther Simmermacher
