South Africa: ANC youth leader Julius Malema faces disciplinary hearing

South African police used stun grenades and water cannon on Tuesday to disperse supporters of outspoken ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema, who faced a party disciplinary hearing today that could derail his political career. Among the charges against Malema is one of bringing the ANC into disrepute by calling for an overthrow of the elected government in neighbouring Botswana. Malema is a controversial figure who has called for the nationalisation of South Africa’s mining sector – an issue that the editor of the region’s largest Catholic weekly newspaper, the Southern Cross, Gunther Simmermacher says is itself a contentious one within the ANC.
