Pope Taught at WYD With his Words and Example: Cardinal Varela
August 30, 2011: Cardinal Rouco Varela, Archbishop of Madrid, Spain thanked Pope
Benedict XVI and said that with his words and example, the Pope preached and taught
young people about Jesus Christ, the root and foundation for their lives. The
Cardinal expressed his gratitude in his speech to the COPE radio network about the
success of the World Youth Day. The delivery of the Pope to the youth was complete
strenuous! and the responses of young people were moving. We lack words to express
the whole depth of our gratitude and affection to our beloved Holy Father Benedict
XVI, he said. It has been an extraordinary and joyful week overflowing grace and
blessing for young people who came from all corners of the earth, and, most particularly
for young people of Madrid and Spain. He said ‘It's time for thanksgiving God the
Father, the giver of all good, Christ, " our friend, brother and the Lord," and the
Holy Spirit, who persuaded her gifts with copious abundance in the hearts of the young
people. Cardinal Varela also conveyed his heartfelt gratitude to all those in
the Church and society in Madrid for their generous collaboration steeped in spiritual
force and witness of the love of Jesus Christ. He thanked the entire diocesan community,
the Auxiliary Bishops and all the diocesan clergy, the Pastors, parochial vicars and
their assigned priests. The families have played an irreplaceable and priceless role
for the reception of young people and their pastors, from the beginning to the end.
Families who have welcomed into their homes so many thousands of pilgrims deserve
our warmest and sincere gratitude, he said. The World Youth Day 2011 in Madrid
had soul. It has been an undoubted and undeniable spiritual event. A new stage in
the path of the Church has been opened to meet young people to offer Christ's saving
presence. The Holy Spirit has been inside its protagonist, with his gifts, and water
that flood the mind and hearts of the sons and daughters of the Church and of every
person who longs to know the truth of Christ, through Christ and in Christ.
