(August 29, 2011) Prayers, cultural programs and visitors from various religions
marked the 101st birth anniversary of Blessed Teresa of Kolkata at the Missionaries
of Charity (MC) Motherhouse on Friday. Celebrations began with morning. Mass in the
Motherhouse chapel led by Coadjutor Archbishop Thomas D’Souza of Calcutta.In his homily,
Archbishop D’Souza urged the gathering to emulate Mother Teresa whom he described
as “a humble missionary of love.”In her message at Mother’s tomb, MC Superior General
Sister Prema said Mother Teresa is as relevant today as in her time because she speaks
to people’s consciences from concrete human situations. People placed flowers and
kissed the tomb that had the words “Happy Birthday our dearest Mother” formed with
marigold petals. The MCs sang happy birthday to Mother and prayed she become a saint
soon. was beatified Oct.19, 2003 and now requires one miracle attributed to her for
her sainthood.
