US urges Israelis, Palestinians to show restraint

The U.S. is urging both the Israelis and Palestinians that unilateral moves do not build trust and forge a path toward peace for the two rivals. Israel's interior minister yesterday confirmed that 1600 housing units for Jewish settlers in East Jerusalem have been approved - a previous announcement of this project caused a diplomatic rift with Washington. The Obama administration is also opposed to the Palestinians going to the United Nations General Assembly for a vote on recognition in the coming month. Israelis and briefly resumed direct peace talks last September, but these unravelled within weeks in a dispute over settlement construction, dashing U.S. President Barack Obama's hopes for an outline peace deal within a year of his taking office.
