The U.S. is urging both the Israelis and Palestinians that unilateral moves do not
build trust and forge a path toward peace for the two rivals. Israel's interior minister
yesterday confirmed that 1600 housing units for Jewish settlers in East Jerusalem
have been approved - a previous announcement of this project caused a diplomatic rift
with Washington. The Obama administration is also opposed to the Palestinians going
to the United Nations General Assembly for a vote on recognition in the coming month.
Israelis and briefly resumed direct peace talks last September, but these unravelled
within weeks in a dispute over settlement construction, dashing U.S. President Barack
Obama's hopes for an outline peace deal within a year of his taking office. Listen
