Activist: Burmese military rulers not serious about reform
The military rulers of Burma, who call their country Myanmar, and Burmese Nobel peace
laureate and pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi have agreed to cooperate to bring
stability and economic development to the country. That’s according to a statement
issued after a meeting on Friday between Suu Kyi and the country’s Labour Minister
on Friday. Mark Farmaner of the Burma Campaign UK told us Burma’s military rulers
are concerned to create the appearance of embracing dialogue with the opposition.
"This is window dressing," said Farmaner, adding that real reform elements within
the ruling party are few and far between. Later this week, Suu Kyi plans to make her
first political foray into the countryside since her release from seven years of house
