Plenary Indulgence on the Occasion of the Madrid World Youth Day
(August 11, 2011) Pope Benedict XVI has issued a Decree granting Plenary Indulgence
to the faithful who are participating in the Twenty Sixth World Youth Day to be held
in Madrid in a spirit of pilgrimage, provided, confessed and truly repented, receive
Holy Communion and they devoutly pray for the intentions of the Pope. Partial Indulgence
is also granted to all the faithful every where, during the World Youth Day. They
are called upon to pray to God with a contrite spirit for the young people, that they
may experience the love of God and receive the strength to preach the Gospel with
their lives. The World Youth day will be held from the 16th to the 21st
of August, with the theme: "Rooted and grounded in Christ, in the faith." This Decree
was issued on the second of August, comes as a response to the petition made to the
Apostolic Penitentiary by Cardinal Antonio Maria Rouco Valera, Archbishop of Madrid
and President of the Bishops' Conference of Spain, on behalf of the young people.
The purpose of the decree was to receive the desired fruits of sanctification by their
spiritual sharing in the World Youth Day. An indulgence is the full or partial remission
of temporal punishment due for sins which have already been forgiven.
