(August 06, 2011) Several Church Institutions in Africa are expressing their solidarity
with the Churches in Liberia which are in anguish, in the face of the political tensions
in the country. An ecumenical visit of solidarity has been planned for coming August
12th by the Ecumenical churches of Liberia and the conference of all the
churches in Africa. The forthcoming constitutional referendum of August 23rd
and the Presidential and Legislative elections due on 11th October have
aroused fears of another civil war, god forbid, after the 30 years of fighting with
2 civil wars from 1980 to 1995 and the from 1999 to 2003. The commission of inquiry
into crimes committed in those wars, set up in 2006, has made recommendations that
have fallen on deaf ears. The ecumenical visitors will meet with political and church
leaders of Liberia as also with women and youth.
