On Wednesday this past week Pope Benedict suggested we read the Bible.
A
suggestion echoed by renowned preacher, Dominican Timothy Radcliffe who gets quizzed
by Veronica Scarisbrick as to what young people might read :
"...If we were
to take something biblical I would say read the second half of the Prophet Isaiah,
it's so wonderful, it's exuberant, it's immensely human. I also utterly love Saint
Augustine. I think his 'Confessions' are amazing, I think that he has a humanity
which bowls one over. I think I would suggest something today more modern... you
could do far worse than read a book by my Irish brother, Paul Murray who teaches here
in Rome and is a poet. He's written a wonderful one on Dominican spirituality. I think
Paul Murray would be someone I would point to. Finally..one of my brethren ..Herbert
McCabe . Herbert had a passion I think for theology and he made it always so exciting..there's
a little collection of his works called 'God Christ and us' ...."
Listen to
Father Timothy Radcliffe who also happens to be an award winning author himself. Among
his works are two books: 'What's the point of being a Christian?' and ' Why go to
Church?'.
