Somalia risks falling further into famine

The United Nations is warning that the famine in the Horn of Africa is spreading and may soon engulf as many as six more regions of the lawless nation of Somalia. The United Nations has already declared a famine in two regions of southern Somalia where 3.7 million people are going hungry.

As the crisis continues to unfold the International Committee of the Red Cross is distributing food to 162,000 people affected by drought in central and southern Somalia.

“The humanitarian situation in Somalia at the moment is really appalling”, says
spokesperson for the ICRC Anna Schaaf, speaking from Nairobi in Kenya.

She told Lydia O’Kane that the situation is so dramatic that the ICRC has started doing food distributions. Listen RealAudioMP3
