Syrian tanks move into Hama

Syrian tanks moved into the city of Hama on Sunday, killing at least 80 people, in a move to end the uprising against against President Bashar al-Assad.

Hama had been the centre of a 1982 uprising against the late President Hafez al-Assad, who sent in the army killing up to 30,000 people in one of the bloodiest episodes in the region’s modern history.

The United States embassy in Damascus said after Sunday’s events that the Syrian authorities have “launched a war against their own people.”
