(July 30, 2011) A press conference in Manila Friday, announced that the Philippine
Catholic bishops’ conference has set up an online portal for those who cannot attend
World Youth Daycelebrations in Madrid, Spain, next month, from 16th to
21st August, due to lack of time or cash. Bishop Joel Baylon, in charge
of the youth apostolate, urged those going to Madrid to make use of the portal by
sharing their photos, reflections, and videos or links with other social networking
sites.“Use the Internet. Tell your friends back home what is happening at World Youth
Day. It is your responsibility to share the Good News of that event with other people
who will not be in Spain,” he said. The bishop also urged youth ministers to organize
activities to create awareness of the global event.“I’m calling on them to set up
structures, opportunities, occasions, activities and programs that will help young
people appreciate World Youth Day and participate in this event in their own way,”
Nepal will not attend WYD, say officials. Controversy erupts over whether an unofficial
group might go 'in secret' . Though Nepal will not send an official delegation to
World Youth Day (WYD), church leaders said this week, that this is unlikely to prevent
the presence at the event, scheduled for August 16-21 in Madrid, of a group of Nepalese
young people who will be attending unofficially. According to Bishop Anthony Sharma,
“our youths are simply not ready to attend WYD this time.” Nepal’s national youth
chaplain, Father Robin Rai, said: “Our talented youth should first get to know each
other at our own national level and bloom at local church levels. We are concentrating
on their spiritual formation at the national level.
