Libya: bishop denounces NATO bombing of food store
(July 27, 2011) Libya’s leading prelate, who is a staunch critic of the NATO military
intervention in the country decried on Tuesday the bombing of a food store. Bishop
Giovanni Martinelli, the Apostolic Vicar of Tripoli said “A few days ago, NATO warplanes
hit a food store just outside Tripoli, which contained oil, pasta, tomato sauce.
A river of oil came out of the warehouse, which was destroyed. I know they have also
hit a social center,” said the prelate and asked “ By what right does one hit a food
center?” Bishop Martinelli, also referred to the psychological pressure, which
is affecting the population, because NATO aircraft continue to fly , especially at
night. He said the Libyans, however, show gratitude to the Church, and related how
two days ago, a group of women came to thank him for prayers said in favour of peace.
On Tuesday, I received another sign, simple but touching, - a gentleman gave us a
basket of figs, saying “these figs are for you because you are a sign of friendship,
" said the Apostolic Vicar of Tripoli.
