Holy See and Malaysia establish diplomatic relations

The Holy See Press office issued a statement announcing “The Holy See and Malaysia, desirous of promoting bonds of mutual friendship, have decided by common accord to establish diplomatic relations at the level of Apostolic Nunciature on the part of the Holy See and of Embassy on the part of Malaysia.”

The announcement of the establishing of diplomatic ties was made during the visit of Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak with Pope Benedict XVI at the papal summer residence in Castel Gandolfo on July 18th.

Malaysia is the 179th country to establish diplomatic relations with the Holy See. The south-east Asian country is 60% Muslim, but the Christian minority makes up nearly 20% of the population.
