One year after floods in Pakistan, thousands still affected
Twelve months after devastating floods struck Pakistan, thousands continue a daily
struggle to support their families and re-establish livelihoods.
The anniversary
of the catastrophic floods also marks the onset of the new monsoon season, which has
raised concerns about renewed flooding.
Emergency relief operations are
continuing in the most vulnerable communities as farmers await the germination of
the first post flood crop.
Michael O’Brien of the International Committee
of the Red Cross said many people still need help to recover: “While the majority
of people have made some sort of recovery, there are still literally thousands of
people who have not had the opportunity to do that and still need assistance.”
“The
biggest problem is the extent of the infrastructure damage at the time the flooding
occurred,” he said. “So it’s not just a question of trying to feed people until they
can grow a crop for themselves.”
