Church urges protection of conscience

The chairman of the U.S. bishops Committee of Pro-life Activities, Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, yesterday called on members of Congress to support the Rights of Conscience Act.

The Institute of Medicine recently recommended the U.S. government should require all private insurance plans, including those run by religious organizations, to cover procedures which they consider immoral.

“It would appear that they would like to force all private health plans to cover contraceptives, sterilization and even some contraceptives that are actually abortifacient,” said Joseph Meaney, Director of International Coordination for Human Life International.

He said the Rights of Conscience Act “would cover that issue and… eliminate the possibility of the Church having to cover contraception, sterilization” among other things.
