Disabled and AIDS sufferers to participate in WYD Way of the Cross
(July 15, 2011) Among the young people who will be carrying the cross in the Way
of the Cross event during the Catholic Church’s World Youth Day in Madrid, Spain this
August, will also be the disabled, AIDS sufferers, disadvantaged people and pilgrims
from conflict zones such as the Holy Land and Iraq, or from regions affected by natural
disasters such as Japan and Haiti. Fr. Eric Jacquinet, who is in charge of the Youth
Section of the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for the Laity said this to SIR, the Italian
bishops’ news agency. He said that among the thousands of participants in the 26th
World Youth Day in the Spanish capital from August 16th to 21st will also be 900 Chinese
from Hong Kong, 2000 Russians, 300 Japanese and 2000 from the Arab countries. Commenting
on the August 19th Way of the Cross, Fr. Jacquinet said the idea is to
show that “Jesus is close to their sufferings, by showing them the right way to move
ahead leaving behind death towards life.”
